Library Services

The J.E. and L.E. Mabee Library at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is located at the heart of the main campus and serves as the main library for UIW. The Mabee Library is open seven days a week and has librarians and knowledgeable staff available to answer your questions via phone, chat, email or face-to-face. Please use the Health Science Libraries link in the left-hand navigation for information about their services.

Current UIW students, faculty and staff using a valid ID, may borrow books, audiovisuals, and other items. They can access electronic resources and conduct research using the computers on the first floor of the library or connect with their own laptop or a borrowed mobile device using the wireless network. 100% of Mabee Library’s electronic resources are accessible remotely to students, staff, and faculty of the university. Walk-in patrons have access to designated workstations and access to UIW Library databases. Licenses/electronic resources can be accessed using a UIW network username and password. UIW Libraries are much more than the resources they provide. It’s about the people, the help guides and artifacts, and co-curricular support for Teaching, Learning, and Research that make UIW Libraries integral to the UIW Mission.

Reference Services

Reference and Research Services are provided to the UIW community via text/chat, email and telephone using our Ask the Library Service , as well as in person at the reference desk staffed by librarians and trained staff. The types of help that users can expect from reference include, but are not limited to:

  • Giving brief factual answers to specific questions, including citation questions;
  • Assisting in locating books and videos in the library;
  • Suggesting resources including journal databases and reliable websites
  • Providing referrals to other libraries or organizations as needed
  • Advising on formulating successful search strategies.

In-depth reference questions may require a reference librarian to email a response to the user or an individual research consultation is available for more extensive questions. One-on-one consultations by discipline liaison librarians are part of the research services provided to students and faculty.
