On September 20, 2019, Cardinal Apps will be the exclusive place to launch the software applications you use every day, including Banner, closing an era of the MyWord portal. Replacing the MyWord portal, Cardinal Apps is accessible on the faculty, staff, and student community websites and enhances the university information security posture. It also brings modern features and easier password recovery techniques to all UIW community members.
**Important: The first time you log into Cardinal Apps, you will need to enroll in self-service password recovery which requires you to provide a secondary email address (non-UIW), a security question, and a cell phone number.
Effective with the retirement of the MyWord portal, on September 20th, we are introducing Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) techniques for access to selected electronic resources. MFA ensures more rigorous vetting of user login credential to prove authenticity. With increased risk of data breaches, phishing scams, extortion attempts, and compromised network accounts, some may discern that multifactor is simply a necessary evil of the times in which we live. So, we chose well the right innovative technologies and we thoughtfully planned how to ensure the easiest, streamlined process for the UIW community that will provide another important layer to our information security framework. If you’re uncertain how MFA operates, think about how electronic access to your banking information works. Periodically, a PIN will be sent via text message to your cell phone. Entering the PIN when accessing an application or other electronic resource will help to better ensure your identity.
**Important: When you are prompted to enroll in multifactor, you will need to provide at least ONE of the following: cell phone number to receive SMS text messages (*most recommended - easiest to setup and use), successful download and installation of the Okta Verify application (available instructions when prompted), or a phone number for voice authentication (least recommended of the three options – should ONLY be used in the absence of a cell phone).
During Phase I of the redesigned UIW.edu (June 2018 to June 2019), a new UIW home page and sites for our health professional schools were designed along with community websites for UIW active students, faculty and staff. In Phase II, three UIW teams – web operations, enrollment marketing, communications and brand marketing – are working over the next year to deliver new website pages for the school of Math, Science and Engineering, Dreeben School of Education, the School of Media & Design, HEB School of Business, and the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences.
Simultaneously, a new search engine that will incorporate uiw.edu and my.uiw.edu content into its rich features will be implemented. A new comprehensive university event calendar will be developed and published using information collected in our new 25Live system (detailed below).
New to the university, 25Live is an enterprise-wide space reservation and event management system. Many people were involved this summer to stand up a system that will benefit our community in many ways. Finding and requesting available space for an event you want to hold, and selecting necessary equipment and services you will need to support your event will be easier than ever before.
A significant benefit of 25Live will be the ability to see events happening across all campuses today, tomorrow and next month. 25Live will improve communication, campus safety, and will increase awareness of possible scheduling conflicts. The project to construct a university-wide calendar of events should be ready by semester end.
Additional functionality will be added to assist in optimizing semester academic classroom schedules to consider academic program requirements, building and location preferences, technology needs, and room capacity in conjunction with expected student registrations.
Engage and GivePulse are two new innovative systems now available. Engage targets our students to explore and get connected with UIW student organizations. If your academic school or discipline has student clubs, groups or organizations, be sure to get them connected to the Engage platform for our students' benefit. GivePulse provides a website rich with service-learning opportunities in and around the San Antonio area.
In collaboration with the Ettling Center for Civic Leadership, a project will begin to harness both systems registration and tracking data to produce a co-curricular transcript for our students which will complement their academic portfolio upon graduation.
More than twenty-six faculty and six hundred students across ten UIW academic schools joined together to take a test drive of Canvas learning management system this fall. Canvas may deliver a more intuitive experience for faculty and students, easier navigation, and better fidelity of reporting than the current LMS. In January 2020, with faculty and student feedback, an assessment of the pilot project will be conducted to determine if Canvas will replace our Blackboard platform by the end of this academic year. We continue to build a foundation of support for Open Educational Resources (OER) and No Additional Cost (NAC) course materials. First reported on last fall, the implementation of a new UIW wide area network was successfully completed this past summer. Complementing the high-capacity university internet connection that was completed in July 2017, the wide area network connects all UIW facilities in/around San Antonio to the Broadway campus. This significant project improves the quality and performance of UIW network service, proactively increases our network capacity for future growth, and adds network redundancy not formerly available that will reduce the risk of failure to/from our professional schools offsite facilities.

Last fall we first reported that UIW had joined EDUROAM, a globally shared wireless network for higher education member institutions. UIW faculty, staff and students can use their UIW credential to securely connect to the EDUROAM wireless network at over 600 universities and higher education affiliates in 100+ countries worldwide. Likewise, faculty, staff, and students from any of the EDUROAM member organizations who visit UIW, are able to connect to EDUROAM by using their home university credential. Since UIW joined EDUROAM, we have had hundreds of people affiliated with other universities use the EDUROAM WiFi on our campus network. Likewise, there is a growing number of UIW faculty connecting to EDUROAM at other university campuses across the globe. Take advantage of EDUROAM as you travel to academic institutions and educational conferences and remember to point your academic colleagues to it while on campus. It works beautifully!
