Professional Nursing: BSN and Beyond
The demand for nursing professionals is high – and the career potential is unlimited. A nurse with a baccalaureate degree will find positions in a variety of settings, including emergency rooms, critical care units, operating rooms/surgical centers, maternity and other medical units.
Other opportunities include home care nursing, clinics, hospices, and rehabilitation centers, as well as careers in research, administration and community health.
Graduates of the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs will find employment as nurse practitioners and as nurse executives and managers. Advanced education affords these professional nurses opportunities to not only provide highly skilled health care, but to improve the care environment and health outcomes for populations of patients who consider nurses to be members of a "most trusted profession." Traditional BSN Track
The Traditional BSN track prepares graduates to take the licensure examination to become a Registered Nurse (RN). Nursing courses include clinical experiences in a variety of settings with clients across the life span. Our new nursing education building includes a state-of-the-art clinical learning center that offers high fidelity simulated learning experiences. UIW graduates are employed around the world in all areas of health care including hospitals, community settings, research, education, parish ministries, government agencies and the military services.

Accelerated BSN Track
Our 16-month Accelerated BSN track was designed to prepare non-nursing bachelor’s degree holders to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) — a requirement to practice as a registered nurse. This accredited, second-degree BSN track combines the convenience of online coursework with hands-on skills and simulation labs at our high-tech ABSN learning site and clinical experiences in a variety of settings treating patients across the human life span.
MSN Program
Designed for the student seeking a Master of Science in Nursing with a focus in Nursing Leadership, Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) or Adult Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) role. This flexible program of study allows the student to apply knowledge and expertise to improve healthcare for clients at the individual and systems level of care. Nursing Leadership students develop administrative competence in human and financial resource management, and in leading change in complex healthcare environments. CNL students focus on addressing issues of health care quality and safety within a selected health care unit, while CNS students have the opportunity to hone skills in managing the health issues of selected adult/geriatric clients in both acute care and community settings.

Doctor of Nursing Practice
The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is designed for nurses seeking the highest degree in nursing practice. DNP graduates are prepared as scholars to improve outcomes through organizational/systems leadership, quality improvement processes, and translation of evidence into practice.
The Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing (IFMSN) offers two options for obtaining a degree as a DNP. If you have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), consider becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) through the BSN to DNP track. If you already hold a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and are an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), then the MSN to DNP track is available to you.
