UIW Scholarships
Description
The UIW - Independent Study Abroad Scholarship is designed to be utilized for students who intend to study abroad at one of UIW’s Sister Schools only. The award can be applied only towards tuition for either the Fall/Spring semester.
Amount
Up to $500.00, awards will be applied towards the tuition only.
Notes
The International Affairs Office is not obligated to award any funds.

- Completing or have completed a Study Abroad application
- Submit all completed study abroad paperwork (Request to Study Abroad Form, Consortium Form, Payment Deferral Form)
- Be financially qualified
- Not have any financial/business office holds; and, cannot be combined with other scholarships offered by the Int’l Affairs Office
If financially qualified, the scholarship will be automatically applied towards the tuition of the program.
Number of Awards
Multiple, Funding for the UIW - Independent Study Abroad Scholarship is limited and is funded per fiscal year. Once the scholarship funds are exhausted, scholarships will no longer be awarded.

Description
The UIW – Faculty-led Scholarship is designed for students who intend to participate in a short-term study abroad program led by their instructor. The award can be applied only towards the cost of the program for the entire year.
Amount
Up to $500.00, awards will be applied towards the cost of the program.

Description
The UIW Service Mission Scholarship aims to help financially qualified UIW registered students defray some of the costs of participating in an official UIW international service mission program. Official service mission programs encompass a UIW program, center, or department representative that lead UIW students to an int’l location aimed at implementing UIW’s mission of service for our global community.

Up to $500.00, awards will be applied towards the cost of participation only.

Service mission program must be pre-approved by the International Affairs Office in writing at least two months before departure.

National Scholarships
The Gilman scholarship provides awards up to $5,000 for U.S. citizen undergraduate students receiving a Federal Pell Grant to study or intern abroad.
Eligibility Checklist:
To be eligible for a Gilman Scholarship, an applicant must be:- A citizen of the United States;
- An undergraduate student in good standing at an accredited institution of higher education in the United States;
- Receiving a Federal Pell Grant or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of his/her study abroad program or internship;
- In the process of applying to, or accepted for, a study abroad or internship program of at least three (3) weeks in a single country or area and eligible for credit from the student's home institution. Proof of program acceptance is required prior to award disbursement;
- Applying for credit-bearing study abroad programs in a country or area with an overall Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2, according to the U.S. Department of State’s Travel Advisory System .
Applicants who are studying a critical need language while abroad can apply for a supplemental award of up to $3,000, for a combined total of $8,000.

The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) invests in promising students with financial need who wish to study abroad. Potential applicants who meet our eligibility requirements may participate on any international education program that meets their academic objectives. Scholarships range from $1,250 – $10,000 and can be applied for programs that run for at least 28 days.
Funding Amounts: FEA awards scholarships of up to $10,000 for students who plan to study abroad for a full academic year; up to $5,000 for students who plan to study abroad during the fall or spring semester; and awards that are prorated by number of weeks in-country (with a minimum of $1,250) for students studying abroad during summer.
Preferences: FEA gives preference to students with demonstrated financial need, and strongly encourages students to apply who represent a group that is traditionally underrepresented in education abroad. These groups include, but are not limited to:
- First-generation college students
- Minority students
- Community college students
Eligibility

- Currently enrolled as an undergraduate at a college or university in the U.S. (graduate students are not eligible)
- Study abroad program must be eligible for credit at the student’s home institution
- Study abroad program must be at least 4 weeks (28 days) in country/countries
Location-Based Scholarships
English speaking university students studying at Soonchunhyang University for one to three semesters who wish to learn about Korean/Asian culture and have the opportunity to share their home culture and language. Students may be reimbursed up to 800,000 KRW(approximately 710 USD) for airfare, receive a full waiver for housing expenses on campus, as well as receive a stipend for weekly living expenses of 120,000 KRW (about 100 USD).
Apply for scholarships to Soonchunhyang University (South Korea)
The purpose of this scholarship is to promote mutual understanding of the cultures, business environments and people of the United States and Japan. Further, its purpose is to help strengthen the relationship between San Antonio and its Japanese sister city, Kumamoto, Japan. A recipient is expected to maintain high standards of achievement while serving as a bridge of understanding and friendship between the peoples of the United States and Japan.
Eligibility Checklist:
To be eligible for the JASSA Scholarship, an applicant must:
- Be a U.S. citizen;
- Demonstrate that courses of study can be done in English (proficiency in the Japanese language is not a requirement);
- Have completed at least 60 college credit hours;
- Be enrolled at any college or university in San Antonio and have been admitted into a study abroad program in Japan;
- Other: the subject area of study should lead to the student developing a foundation for promoting a stronger relationship between the United States and Japan;
- Be willing to participate in and support local activities of JASSA.
Selection of a candidate for the scholarship is to be based solely on the qualification of the applicant without regard for economic status, age, sex, race or religion.
Scholarship Award: The awardees will receive a one-year scholarship, in an amount ranging from $1,000 to $2,500. Recipients are permitted to reapply for a second scholarship. The JASSA scholarship committee will make the final selection of the recipients. The award will be made in one payment to the recipient. All the applicants will be notified of the decision.
Apply for the Japan America Society of San Antonio Scholarship Program
The Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Funding from private foundations and major U.S. corporations, through donations to the nonprofit US-Japan Bridging Foundation, makes it possible to award about 100 scholarships each year to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan for a semester or an academic year. Applications are accepted twice a year for Bridging Scholarships.

A Freeman-ASIA Award provides need-based funding to assist the recipient with the cost of the study abroad program and related expenses, including airfare, basic living costs, local transportation, books, etc.
Grant amounts are:
- Summer Award: up to $3,000
- Semester/Quarter Award: up to $5,000
- Academic Year Award: up to $7,000
Eligibility
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident at the time of application.
- Must currently receive need-based financial aid or demonstrate a verifiable need for financial assistance to participate in the proposed study abroad program. The applicant is required to submit the Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) figure, calculated through FAFSA, with the statement of financial need through the online Freeman-ASIA application.
- Must be an undergraduate student with a minimum GPA of 2.8, pursuing his or her first bachelor's degree (or associate's degree), at a two-year or a four-year institution of higher education in the United States.
- Must apply through the U.S. home campus and have at least one term of enrollment remaining at the home institution in the U.S. upon returning from studying abroad in Asia.
- Must have applied or have been accepted to a study abroad based program in: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam. A multi-country program is eligible only if the applicant will spend at least 8 weeks in one of the countries stated above and will have intensive language study during that period.
- Must have applied to or have been accepted by a study abroad based program that awards academic credits through the home campus or other U.S. accredited college or university. The proposed length of study in the host country must be a minimum of 8 weeks for a summer term, 10 weeks for a quarter term, and 12 weeks for a semester term.
- Must have little or no previous experience in the country in which he or she plans to study. A summer term applicant must not have spent more than 4 weeks in the proposed country of study within the last 5 years. A semester or an academic year term applicant must not have spent more than 6 weeks in the proposed country of study within the last 5 years.
- Must submit the online Freeman-ASIA Student Impact Survey within one month of returning to the United States and must initiate his/her service project to promote study abroad opportunities in Asia on the college campus and/or in the local community.
- Must submit the Freeman-ASIA Final Service Report on the implementation of his/her service project at the end of the term following his/her return to the United States.
- Must not be a previous Freeman-ASIA award recipient.
