Campus Emergency Response Protocol for Injured / Ill Student at UIW / IWHS / SACHS
In the event of a student injury or illness, call University Police at 829.6030.
The University of the Incarnate Word University Police are the designated first responders to emergency and medical situations.
If the Incident/Accident is
An Emergency
Call 911 immediately and then call University Police at 829-6030. Once on the scene, University Police will determine what additional level of medical support is required and will assist in directing EMS to the specific location. University Police may contact Health Services to assist with first aid pending the 911 response.
Not an Emergency and During Business Hours
Call Health Services at 829-6017 or go to Health Services located at the first floor of the Agnese/Sosa Parking Garage across the rear entrance to the Nursing Building (door with a red canopy).
During Non-business Hours
Call University Police. Once on the scene, University Police will determine what additional level of medical support is required and may call 911 or refer the student to seek care at an urgent care clinic or a primary care provider.
The closest urgent care clinic to main campus accepting UIW Student Insurance (Wellfleet) is Texas MedClinic (1007 NE Loop 410 Between Nacogdoches and Broadway).

During non-business hours, if a student with UIW Student Insurance (Wellfleet) needs to visit the Texas MedClinic, please contact the UIW Health Clinic first thing on the next business day to obtain a referral. This will bring your co-pay to $25.
UIW / IWHS / SACHS Campus Emergency Response Protocol for Guests on Campus (Non-Employee and Non-Student)
The University of the Incarnate Word University Police are the designated first responders to emergency and medical situations that occur on campus. If the affected person is an employee that is injured while on the job, please refer to the Workers Compensation Emergency Protocol for UIW / IWHS / SACHS Injured or Ill Employee for direction.
If the affected person is a student, please refer the Campus Emergency Response Protocol for Injured / Ill Student at UIW / IWHS / SACHS for direction.
The University of the Incarnate Word is committed to protecting the health and welfare of all members of our community. Even with the best of planning, critical situations may arise where an intervention is required. In the event you witness an emergent situation, call University Police at 829-6030. If you witness someone experiencing symptoms that could be a threat to life, call 911 immediately and then call University Police so they can assist in expediting EMS to the specific location.
The University Police are trained in basic first aid, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, and use of automatic external defibrillators. Once on the scene, the University Police will determine what additional level of medical support is required. For symptoms that are not a medical emergency, the University Police will assess the situation and may make a referral as appropriate. If the affected person is in a medical emergency and unable to transport him/herself, 911 may be called for assistance.
Symptoms that may threaten life include:
- Not breathing and /or no pulse
- Unconsciousness
- Difficulty breathing
- Head or neck injury
- Suicidal ideation/homicidal intentions
- Choking
- Substance abuse
- Seizures
Workers Compensation Emergency Protocol for UIW / IWHS / SACHS Injured or Ill Employee
(Including Student Employee/ Work-study on the Job)
In the event of an occupational injury or occupational illness, notify your immediate supervisor and University Police. The University of the Incarnate Word University Police are the designated first responders to emergency and medical situations.
If the Incident/Accident is
An Emergency
Call 911 immediately and then call University Police at 829-6030. Once on the scene, University Police will determine what additional level of medical support is required and will assist in directing EMS to the specific location. University Police may contact Health Services to assist with first aid pending the 911 response.
Not an Emergency
Call University Police. Once on the scene, University Police will determine what additional level of medical support is required and may call 911 or refer the employee to Health Services where first aid will be rendered.
During Business Hours
Health Services or Human Resources may refer the employee to a clinic designated as a work's compensation clinic for treatment. Texas MedClinic is also authorized to treat work related injuries. There are several Texas MedClinic locations around San Antonio. The most convenient to the University is located at 410 and Broadway. Health Services or Human Resources will initiate the First Report of Incident within 24 hours of incident.
During Non-business Hours
Supervisor may refer an employee to the nearest hospital emergency room as necessary and initiates the First Report of Incident on the next business day following the incident.
No employee shall transport another injured employee to receive medical care. However, in the rare situation where the injured employee is unable to drive him/her self because of the nature of the injury sustained, University Police may provide transportation.
