Hometown Showdown River Rally
The Hometown Showdown between UIW and UTSA — the first meeting on the football field between San Antonio’s two NCAA Division I universities — featured a River Rally at Arneson River Theater on Thursday, Aug. 29.
Festivities began at 6:30 p.m. with a river parade featuring boats carrying members of each football team, as well as dignitaries, bands and cheerleaders from both schools.
The boats arrived at Arneson River Theater at 7 p.m. for the River Rally, which featured speakers from both universities and football programs, as well as performances from the schools spirit teams and marching bands.
Cardinal City showed up in full force to support UIW Football! See you at the game tomorrow!

Mass of the Holy Spirit
All are invited to attend this year's Mass of the Holy Spirit on Wednesday, September 4 at noon in Our Lady's Chapel. In keeping with a long tradition dating from the founding of the great European universities in the Middle Ages, UIW celebrates the Mass of the Holy Spirit at the start of each academic year. During the liturgy, we ask for the inspiration, guidance, and presence of God's Spirit on all of our campus activities. Help us fill the chapel during this festive event as we rededicate ourselves to UIW's Mission, to renew friendships, and to welcome new members. CCVI Jubilee - Celebrating 150 Years
We invite you to celebrate 150 years of blessings at the following events:
- November 1, 2019
8:30 am — Morning Prayer, Chapel of the Incarnate Word, followed by an unveiling of a “150” commemorative plaque in the Incarnate Word Cemetery, honoring our deceased Sisters.
6:00 pm — Eucharist in the Chapel of the Incarnate Word honoring our “great cloud of witnesses” (deceased Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word). - November 3, 2019
3:00 pm — Concert by “Chanticleer” all-male vocal ensemble — Chapel of the Incarnate Word. - November 23, 2019
3:00 pm — Celebrate the annual “Light the Way” with the University of the Incarnate Word. - December 3, 2019
6:00 pm — Eucharist celebrated with CHRISTUS Santa Rosa, remembering the first Mass celebrated at Santa Rosa Infirmary on this day in 1869 — Chapel of the Incarnate Word.
Celebrate the CCVI Jubilee and support their ministries by purchasing their 2019 medal. Medals may be purchased all year at the CCVI International Support Office (The Generalate - 4503 Broadway) or in Sr. Kathleen Coughlin's (SEC 2053).

Events
UIW @ UTSA: Important Game Day Information
PARKING:
- There is NO parking at the Alamodome.
- There are other paid parking lots near the Alamodome that will be open for game day parking.
- There will be limited ADA parking available in Lot A for those with a handicap placard or tag. After the spots are filled, you may still drop off in Lot A as this is the most accessible entrance into the Alamodome.
VIA Park-and-Ride from UIW:
- Cardinal fans are encouraged to park at the UIW Broadway campus and ride the VIA buses to the Alamodome.
- Service will begin at 2:30 p.m. at the AT&T parking lot (across the street from the UIW Broadway campus). Shuttles run every 15 minutes until kickoff. Return service is available throughout the game and ends one (1) hour after the game.
- A roundtrip bus pass is $2.50 with a student ID and $5 for all other guests.
- Park-and-ride tickets can be purchased in advance using VIA’s goMobile app. Tickets will also be available at any VIA Information Center. Special Event tokens and Day Passes can be purchased with cash or credit card on game days at the boarding locations.
- There is no vehicle parking available at AT&T. Vehicles may park in any unmarked space on the UIW Broadway campus and walk across the street to the boarding location at AT&T.

CARDINAL TAKEOVER PRE-GAME PARTY (purchase of pre-game pass does NOT include game ticket):
- If you purchased tickets to the pre-game party, you will receive your passes upon arrival at Smoke on Saturday, August 31.
- The Cardinal Takeover Pre-Game Party will take place at Smoke BBQ Restaurant and E Commerce Plaza (in front of Sunset Station, two blocks north of the Alamodome) Walking distance from the Alamodome!
- The party runs from 12:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
- Walk-ups to the pre-game party are welcome.
- VIP passes include unlimited brisket and turkey carving stations, St. Louis ribs, a mashed potato bar, Smoke’s signature tres leches cake and more! VIP passes also include the VIP open bar from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Game ticket not included.
GAME INFORMATION:
- The UIW ticket section for the UTSA game is SOLD OUT. To purchase tickets in other sections, visit goutsa.com or call the UTSA ticket office at (210) 458-8872.
- The Alamodome and Cardinal Takeover Pre-Game Party will enforce a clear bag policy. See the image below for information on what bags may and may not be brought to Hometown Showdown festivities this weekend.
- Stop by the Cardinal Shoppe, located in the Student Engagement Center on UIW’s Broadway campus, to purchase regulation, clear bags with the UIW logo. The Cardinal Shoppe will also be on-site at the Cardinal Takeover Pre-Game Party.
- Gates will open an hour and a half before kickoff.

Community News
Cardinals' Cupboard Grand Opening
The Student Government Association, Mission and Ministry and the Ettling Center for Civic Leadership and Sustainability, together with the UIW community came together to create the Cardinals’ Cupboard in response to issues of food insecurity on college campuses. The food pantry was created in the hope that members of the UIW community, especially students, can utilize the service whenever they are in need of assistance. On Thursday, Aug. 29, the Cardinals' Cupboard was formally dedicated and opened at Joeris Residence Hall. For information on how to benefit from this ministry, please call the Ettling Center at (210) 283-6423.
Carlos Alvarez Meets Scholarship Recipients
On Friday, Aug. 23, UIW welcomed Mr. Carlos Alvarez to the 2019 Honors Convocation. In 2018, the University of the Incarnate Word received a $1 million donation from the Impetus Foundation to establish the Carlos and Malú Alvarez Endowed Student Scholarship.
The gift marked the largest endowed scholarship in the history of UIW designed to provide high performing and under resourced students with the financial support and mentoring to participate equally with their peers in “keys to excellence” opportunities.
Mr. Alvarez met the first recipients of the newly established scholarship at the event on Friday.
Welcome Week
UIW welcomed its students back to the nest on Monday, Aug. 26 with the official launch of the new school year. Students enjoyed various activities including a Student Org Fair, caricature drawings, making their own stuffed animals and more. Thank you to everyone who made our Cardinals' first week back a great one!
Welcome, International Students
UIW has welcomed over 100 new international students from 36 countries this semester! As part of international student orientation, the new students learned valuable information that will ease their transition to UIW. Students also visited the Alamo and other local attractions and took a tour of the City Council Chambers with the City of San Antonio's International Relations Office.

A Conversation on the U.S.- Korea Relationship
A distinguished speaker series event of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio, A Conversation on the U.S. – Korea Relationship, was held in the UIW Seddon Recital Hall on Tuesday, Aug. 27. The Division of International Students hosted the panel discussion for more than 80 students and community members.
The discussion was moderated by former Congressman Charlie Gonzalez and included Korea Economic Institute of America Director of Communications, Yong Kwon; First Secretary of the Embassy of Republic of Korea in the United States, Jihyun Lee; and U.S. Department of State Foreign Affairs Officer, Jennifer Steffensen.
The Art of Learning Leadership: Dr. Dorothy Ettling, a Transformative Educator and Activist
On Wednesday, Aug. 28, the UIW community celebrated the legacy of Dr. Dorothy Ettling, CCVI, Women’s Global Connection co-founder, at a panel discussion on recently published research about how to apply "Sister Dot's" leadership style. The discussion featured journal article authors Drs. Alison Buck, Sherry Herbers and Norm St. Clair. A light wine and cheese reception followed, as well as a gallery photo exhibit titled Peru in Pictures: Three Years of WGC Service Trips. The exhibit will run through September 6.
